Distribution - Videos and Related Books

This 58-minute video describes how distribution systems are laid out, and their component parts. It shows how to recognize transformers, voltage regulators, and capacitors, and explains in general terms, how each works. It introduces the process of sectionalizing, and demonstrates how protective devices protect the system from damage, and its customers from outages.

Training Sessions
Introduction to Distribution Systems – 7 minutes

Lists the basic components used in a distribution system. Explains the basic differences between primary and secondary distribution systems.

Transformers – 9 minutes

Defines the term transformer, and explains in general terms how a transformer works. Using a simplified diagram, identifies basic elements common to most transformers. Shows how to recognize pole top, pad-mounted, and subsurface transformers.

Voltage Regulators and Capacitors – 12 minutes
Defines voltage regulator. Identifies the electrical and physical elements that make up a typical voltage regulator. Explains in general terms how a voltage regulator works. Defines a capacitor and explains in general terms how a capacitor works. Describes a potential safety hazard inherent in all capacitors.

Distribution Lines and Layouts – 9 minutes
Explains how electrical energy flows from the substation to the consumer. Lists three categories of distribution lines and the range of voltage carried by each line. Shows three types of distribution layouts

Protective Devices, Part 1 – 11 minutes
Explains how circuit breakers operate to protect a distribution feeder from the effects of faults. Describes how circuit breakers and fuses are used in a coordinated protective system to protect feeders and laterals from the effects of faults. Explains how sectionalizing can be accomplished to protect customers from long outages.

Protective Devices, Part 2 – 10 minutes
Describes how reclosers and sectionalizers provide coordinated protection for a distribution system. Describes two devices that protect a distribution system from excessive current flow caused by voltage surges.
